Myths and Legends.

They accompany nearly every castle. Add exquisite panoramic landscapes swirling around a fortress set upon a central pedestal featuring brilliantly-colored interiors, and you have a must-see bastion of quintessential Scotland here at Stirling Castle.

Some of the best, most expansive views of a Scottish town undoubtedly come from the majestic and regal Stirling Castle. Set upon an extinct volcanic pedestal, the former royal residence offers grandeur and beauty to the visitor that gives a more home-y feel both inside and out, compared to Edinburgh’s own famed fortress. This is the start of what makes Stirling Castle an absolute must-see on any visitor’s list.

Upon entering the periphery of the town of Stirling, an instant affinity towards the allure of its charming streets and landscapes fills the senses. History has left an indelible mark on these rolling hills, as both Robert the Bruce and William Wallace have sojourned around and through the immediate surroundings.

Stirling Castle’s Royal Palace underwent a multi-million pound renovation a few years ago and includes restoration of several stunning, hand-woven tapestries. The prominently featured ‘star’ of these tapestries is the mythical unicorn, a traditional Scottish heraldic symbol since the 12th century. The sumptuous and vibrant colors of these gorgeous wall hangings make you feel as if you’ve stepped into a 4k Wizard of Oz moment. It is truly a feast for the eyes, unlike any I have seen yet within Scotland’s castle’s walls.

Step inside various areas to learn about how the castle’s kitchens kept up with numerous feasts and parties, the military barracks of those dedicated to security, the history of such figures as Mary, Queen of Scots on to the current Queen Elizabeth II. A large display of this massive undertaking to recreate beautiful medieval tapestries can be found in the section known as The Stirling Tapestries.

On the way out near the front gates, you’ll find what is known as the The Castle Exhibition, with a 3-D model replica of the castle and informative displays throughout. If you need to entertain children, The Palace Vaults contain interactive activities just to elicit fun and giggles. There is something for everyone.

Round out your time here by enjoying the town of Stirling, replete with pubs and cobblestone streets to explore and enjoy Scottish hospitality among locals.

In addition to all of the castle “goodies” on the inside, it’s the exteriors and the surroundings that eagerly display Stirling’s majesty. And how could it not, being perched at a thrilling high point with 360 degree views for miles to see? Pair that with misty mornings, and the effect is mysterious and mesmerizing.

Please be sure to visit the castle’s website here for additional information including operating days and times.
